Ali Bates - Queensland Community Artist

'as the forest breathes out, we breathe in ... created by relating to a community and expressing what makes it feel indigenous with the land, my art is not an object, it forms part of a community and site specific ritual ...'

Ship Burning
Since 1991 in Australia and Europe, Ali has produced site specific works using mostly natural materials, involving the community and culminating in a ceremonial burning.

The rituals she creates are specific to the relationship between the community, its history and use of place and provide a way for the community to symbolize its future.

Viking Boat

Ali's art explores the relationship between the community and the land it occupies in a way which does not abuse nature to accentuate the mystic bonds of people with the land.
